Spotlight on Fabric Designers

Flohr & Co. is a brand new British company set up by Caroline Smith who works from her North Yorkshire studio designing beautiful furnishing fabrics which are then digitally printed on gorgeous linens. You can see more of these lovely fabrics by clicking through from our Fabric Collections page.

When I came up with the idea of making fabric I wanted to create something original that had never been done before. I love texture and pattern and I have always loved drawing and colour, but my real passion has always been sewing.

I have sewn from an early age making all sorts of things, but let's just say I am not a perfectionist and, along with my dyslexia, I always seem to sew two left legs for instance! When I was introduced to machine embroidery at the age of 14 by my textiles teacher I knew this was the thing for me. I continued to use my trusty Bernina all throughout art college and this has now come through in the making of my fabric.

Each image is freehand drawn, painted using acrylics, watercolour, coloured pencils, wall paint - even nail varnish sometimes! - then embroidered and appliquéd using vintage scraps of fabric, before being approved and sent off to print.

I started off with my Original Pheasant and Stork designs and more recently I have added ducks and geese. I now also have a range of co-ordinates – checks, spots and stripes - in most of my colours. Some of these, currently the stripes and spots, have also been used as backgrounds to some of my original designs.

I am constantly working on new designs and ideas, some of which will make their way into my ranges. As my fabrics are digitally printed to order it gives me the flexibility to try things out and make adjustments before deciding on the final designs and colours.

I hope you enjoy browsing my range and that you share my love of fabrics, and possibly sewing too.
